Safety Award: Xcel Mechanical Nets Fifth Cal/OSHA Golden Gate Recognition

POMONA, CA — Xcel Mechanical Systems’ jobsite at Cal Poly Pomona was presented with a Cal/OSHA Golden Gate Safety Award today after an agency auditor determined that our teams there had established “demonstrated commitment” to maintaining effective safety and health management systems, said Steve Prisk, company safety director.

General Contracting partner C.W. Driver demonstrated its ongoing commitment to creating and maintaining a safe jobsite for its employees – and all subcontractors performing work at the site – by informing all that Cal/OSHA would be invited in for a completed review and inspection of safety policies and procedures. The consultative visit included conducting independent employee interviews to measure awareness and participation in each company’s safety program.

“The GC’s goal was to achieve Golden Gate status for this jobsite, no question,” Prisk said. “C.W. Driver has created an environment where the rest of us feel safe. So the question was: `Would the subcontractors also pass the test?’”

The Cal/OSHA consultant first met with Prisk and did a thorough review of Xcel Mechanical’s Injury, Illness and Prevention Program.

He then visited the jobsite and met with company tradesmen. All were found to be in compliance with the policies and goals of Xcel Mechanical’s safety program, meeting the intent of Cal/OSHA’s topline objective of keeping employers, employees and jobsites safe from preventable hazards and injuries.

The Cal/OSHA auditor also praised Xcel Mechanical’s monthly Safety Newsletter and monthly Safety Incentive Program.

“The use of the company newsletter to convey all matters regarding safety and health from accidents to hazard trends is exceptional. Interviews indicate that is read by the field personnel and well received,” the auditor wrote.

“[And] the monthly incentive program you have in place appears to be an effective tool in not only gaining compliance to your safety and health program, [it] also appears to be getting more employees actively involved in the program as well.”

“Our guys were awesome,” Prisk said. “They represented Xcel Mechanical extremely well. In fact, the auditor said that if all his reviews went like ours, his job would be a lot easier.”

Golden Gate recognition was developed to provide motivation and support to employers who proactively work with their employees and the Cal/OSHA Consultation Service to continuously improve safety and health management systems. This is Xcel Mechanical’s fifth Golden Gate Award since 2013.
